Day 22: Caves de Marsons: manger avec les troglodytes/ Caves de Marson: Eating with the Troglodytes
Our host had recommended a meal at a restaurant
in the Caves de Marsons. He said it was
a good value venue where the food was plentiful and the menu limited.
As it was predicted to rain that day, we
decided it was a good option to go there for lunch and made a booking.
Sure enough the temperatures plunged and
the rain arrived for most of the day.
The GPS took us on a very circuitous route to the Caves., but eventually we got there. The restaurant is literally in caves which
are formed by the rock mined for the lovely privately owned chateau across the
road. The caves were warm and we had a
little table next to a window with lighted candles on the ledge, that looked
out on the very grey, wet and gloomy day, not that we thought it was once we
were inside there. There was no à la
carte menu, just four versions of the same menu with the only variation being
different patés and a chipolata type
sausage included in one of the mains. It
was basic French cooking at its best. The
four courses included a mushroom tartlette, a freshly cooked bread called fouée
with duck rillette and pickles, a salad with
moguettes (haricot beans), goats’ cheese with honey, and a fruit
crumble. It was substantial and filling,
so much so that in the evening we just had a few vegetables. We had a Cremant de Loire to start with and a
bottle of basic Saumur red wine to go with the meal.
We returned the rental car afterwards and
walked back to the apartment in the drizzle spending the rest of the day relaxing
and reading.
