We were not sure what the weather was going
to be like on Friday so decided that we would take the train to Tours (an hour
long trip) and have a look around the town.
I really like the train trips as I see things I don’t see when I am
driving. The trains are very comfortable
but not that cheap. However when you
compare taking the car and paying auto-route tolls it is not too
different.
It was a strange place to get around. It took us a while to get our bearings but
soon we found a little medieval quarter and also discovered that some of the
buildings that look only a hundred years old or so can be up to 400 years
old. The architecture has clearly not
changed that much during the last few centuries. We looked in a very large cathedral (Cathederal de Tours), nothing
that spectacular, but bigger than what we have in New Zealand. The history of it, for me, was the most
interesting.
We thought the train we were taking back to Saumur would
be before the main commuter time but we were wrong and it was full with
commuters travelling back to wherever -
some just a couple of stops down the line, others much further.
We were going to have a nice meal out that
evening and I had thought I had booked a table through the internet. When we turned up however, we found nothing
was available as there was a private function on, so we turned around and went to another nice
one nearby. A bit of a disappointment initially
as the one we wanted to go to looked really good.
All was not lost however and we had a lovely
evening.
